The presentation intends to briefly reconstruct the numismatic activity of the Venetian collector Apostolo Zeno (1668-1750). With the support of the documentary sources, in particular his numerous letters, it will be possible to retrace the main phases through which Zeno collected more than ten thousand ancient coins, about a third of which were Greeks.
The second part of the discussion will analyse the destiny of the coin collection, starting from the sale that Zeno made in 1747, and continuing with the vicissitudes that affected the collection until the auction at the Dorotheum house in Vienna (1955-1957).
